Why I’m a Bar Coach

Chris holds a B.A. from UC Berkeley, a Masters degree in Public Administration from CSU East Bay, and both a Masters degree in Business Administration and a Law degree from Golden Gate University. Even with this education he could not pass the bar exam.

We met by happenstance. I mentioned I’d been the California State Bar’s Examinations Director and a bar grader for 40 exams before that. He asked me to coach him.

We worked together for two months. Sometimes it seemed like all the time: meeting twice a week, e-mailing, talking on the phone. Once we spent an entire hour discussing one paragraph of an essay answer he’d written, expecting that from this detailed effort, his writing would improve across the board. It worked.

Chris passed on his seventh try. I became a bar coach. I will do whatever it takes to teach you how to pass.
